Professional 3D Print Post-Processing and Finishing
Bridging the gap between a raw 3D print and a market-ready product. We provide high-precision surface refinement, industrial priming, and bespoke painting to eliminate layer lines and achieve flawless aesthetic results.
Raw 3D prints, whether produced via FDM or SLA, often carry the hallmarks of their manufacturing process: visible layer lines, support scars, or a matte, porous texture. For many engineering prototypes, these characteristics are acceptable. However, when a part is destined for a client presentation, a wind-tunnel test, or a consumer product mock-up, the surface quality must be indistinguishable from injection-moulded plastic.
At Bandhdelta, our post-processing service is designed to transform these raw geometries into refined, tactile objects. We combine traditional craftsmanship with modern chemical and mechanical finishing techniques. By removing the "digital" look of the part, we allow designers and engineers in Brisbane to validate the ergonomics, aesthetics, and assembly fit of their designs without the cost of expensive tooling.
The Finishing Workflow
Support Removal & Cleaning
Careful mechanical removal of support structures using precision nippers and scalpels to prevent surface gouging, followed by an ultrasonic or chemical bath to remove residual resins or adhesives.
Progressive Abrasive Sanding
A multi-stage sanding process starting with coarse grits to level the layer lines and transitioning to ultra-fine grits (up to 2000+) to create a smooth, uniform surface across all axes.
Filling & Priming
Application of high-build industrial fillers to seal micro-pores and gaps, followed by several layers of professional primer which are then sanded back to reveal any remaining imperfections.
Final Coating & Painting
Application of the final colour coat using precision spray equipment, followed by a protective clear coat (matte, satin, or gloss) to ensure durability and the desired visual finish.
Who Requires Professional Finishing?
Our post-processing services are essential for clients who cannot compromise on the visual or tactile quality of their parts. This includes industrial designers creating "looks-like" prototypes for stakeholder approval, where the goal is to simulate a final retail product. It is also critical for architects who need scaled models that look realistic under studio lighting, and for automotive or consumer electronics engineers who require a smooth surface for aerodynamic testing or tactile ergonomic evaluation.
Furthermore, we assist hobbyists and inventors who have the digital design but lack the specialized equipment—such as airbrushes, spray booths, and high-grade abrasives—to achieve a professional finish. By outsourcing the finishing stage to Bandhdelta, you ensure that the final object reflects the quality of the original engineering intent.
How the Process Works
The process begins with a technical review of the printed part. We assess the material (PLA, ABS, or Resin) because each requires a different approach to sanding and priming. For example, ABS can be vapour-smoothed, while resins require specific curing and sanding protocols to avoid overheating the plastic. Once the strategy is defined, the part enters our manual workstation where technicians handle each stage of the workflow.
Throughout the process, we maintain strict dimensional control. While sanding removes material, our technicians use calipers to ensure that critical tolerances (within our standard 0.2 mm limit) are maintained. If a part requires high-precision fitment, we focus our sanding on non-critical surfaces and use precision masking for mating faces.
What the Client Should Prepare
To achieve a high-quality result, we recommend providing a clear "Finishing Specification" document. This should include the desired final colour (preferably a RAL or Pantone code), the required sheen level (e.g., High Gloss, Matte, or Satin), and a list of critical areas that must remain untouched for assembly purposes. If the part is being printed by another provider, ensure it is delivered to us in a clean state, free of heavy oils or contaminants.
Providing a 3D file (STL or STEP) alongside the physical part is also highly beneficial. This allows our team to identify internal voids or thin walls that might be susceptible to warping during the chemical priming or painting stages, allowing us to adjust the technique accordingly.
Deliverables and Final Output
Upon completion, the client receives a fully finished physical component, meticulously cleaned and packaged to prevent surface scratches during transit. For projects involving multiple iterations, we provide a brief report on the finishing challenges encountered, which can help in optimising the original 3D model for better "print-to-finish" efficiency.
If the project included a design phase, the client also receives the final updated digital files. All parts are delivered with a quality check confirmation, ensuring that the final aesthetic meets the agreed-upon specifications and that the structural integrity of the part has not been compromised by the abrasive processes.
Lead Times and Scheduling
Post-processing is a time-intensive manual craft. While the 3D printing phase might take hours, the finishing phase often takes days due to the necessary drying and curing times between primer and paint layers. Typically, a standard finishing project adds 3 to 7 business days to the total lead time. For urgent prototypes, we can implement an expedited schedule for an additional 30% fee, though we always recommend allowing full curing times for a high-quality result.
What is Not Included
Our post-processing service focuses on surface aesthetics and tactile refinement. It does not include structural reinforcement of the part (such as internal metal inserts) unless specifically quoted as a separate engineering task. We do not provide certified automotive-grade paint for parts intended for high-heat engine environments, nor do we provide medical-grade biocompatible coatings. Additionally, the cost of the initial 3D print is separate from the post-processing labour.
Pricing Structure and GST
Pricing for post-processing is calculated based on the total labour hours required to reach the specified finish. This includes the time spent on support removal, sanding, masking, and painting. All prices listed in our tables are provided both including and excluding the 10% Goods and Services Tax (GST). For B2B clients, payment terms are generally 14 days from the date of invoice. A 50% deposit is required for all custom finishing work to secure the studio time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you make a 3D print look like injection-moulded plastic?
Yes. Through a combination of high-build priming, progressive sanding, and professional spray painting, we can eliminate layer lines and surface porosity, achieving a finish that closely mimics the smooth, uniform appearance of injection-moulded parts.
Will sanding affect the dimensions of my part?
Sanding does remove a small amount of material. However, we operate within a dimensional tolerance of 0.2 mm. If you have critical mating surfaces, please notify us so we can mask those areas and ensure they remain untouched.
Do you offer custom colours?
Absolutely. We can match most colours if provided with a RAL or Pantone code. We use professional-grade paints and clear coats to ensure the colour is consistent and the finish is durable.
Can you post-process parts printed by another company?
Yes, we accept external parts for finishing. We simply require a technical review of the material used to ensure the correct abrasives and primers are applied. Please contact us via our contact page for a quote.
